Shane Tolbert received his BFA in Painting from the University of Houston in 2008 and his MFA in Painting from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2010. Tolbert’s work has been exhibited twice at the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston and was included in the McClain Gallery exhibition Summertime Blues in 2014, with subsequent solo exhibitions in 2018, 2021, and 2024. In New York, Tolbert participated in the Edward Albee Foundation Residency, Montauk and has shown with David Richard Gallery and in the group show UnderErasure at Pierogi Gallery. Tolbert also completed the Ucross Artist Residency in Wyoming. Public projects include an outdoor installation at the Blaffer Art Museum’s downtown Houston satellite space, commissions for United Airlines, a long term installation at NorthPark shopping center in Dallas and large scale mural at CityCentre lobby space in Houston in association with Weingarten Art Group. His work has been reviewed in Art in America, Glasstire, and Visual Art Source, among others; and his writings have been published in Southwest Contemporary (previously THE Magazine). Most recently, Tolbert has completed a residency at the Tamarind Institute, Albuquerque, where he collaborated with Printers in Training to complete 2 lithography editions. This summer he will participate in Alfred University’s artist residency in Düsseldorf, Germany. Tolbert is the acting Academic Director for the School of Art & Design at Santa Fe Community College where he also teaches courses in Drawing & Painting.
